Teacher Training Program

The curriculum for students enrolled in a Teacher Training (Cosmetology) program shall consist of six hundred (600) clock hours of technical instruction and practical operations in teaching the art of cosmetology, as defined in section 7316 of the Barbering and Cosmetology Act. Technical instruction means instruction by demonstration, lecture, classroom participation, or examination. Instruction will be taught in English. Practical operation shall mean the actual performance by the instructor trainee of teaching techniques and principles. Please note 110 hours will be devoted to clinic/theory experience which shall include all phases of being an Instructor.

Curriculum Breakdown

  • Laws and Regulations (20 Hours)
    Include, but is not limited to, the following issues: The Barbering and Cosmetology Act
    and the Board’s Rules and Regulations.

  • Instructional Techniques (30 Hours)
    Method of instruction, lecture; demonstration;
    performance; communication skills; instructional aids and the use of questions to promote learning

  • Organization Techniques (30 Hours + 50 Practical Operations)
    Learn 4 step teaching method: performance objectives;
    and learning domains, etc.

  • Lesson Planning (40 Hours + 50 Practical Operations)
    Subject; title; outlines; development; and visual aids, etc.

  • Evaluation Techniques (10 Hours + 50 Practical Operations)
    Purpose of tests; types of tests; test administration;
    scoring; and grading , etc.

  • Classroom and Technical Instruction (20 Hours + 140 Practical Operations)
    Conducting classroom and technical instructions and demonstrations for three (3) or more students on
    all practices of cosmetology, including the Barbering and Cosmetology Act and Rules and Regulations.
    (Shall be conducted under the supervision of a licensed instructor).

  • Supervising and Training Students (20 Hours + 140 Practical Operations)
    Supervising and Training of students while they are practicing the art of cosmetology
    on a live person or mannequin in a classroom or laboratory.

Instructional Method

Instructors will be utilizing various instructional methods including, but not limited to, on-site education, hands-on education, textbooks, videos, study guides, and lectures. If utilizing Distance learning, instructors will also incorporate a combination of Zoom, Milady MindTap, and pre-recorded classes.

Program Objectives

To help develop the ability to:
1. Teach related information, manipulative operations, and techniques.
2. Use various teaching aids, such as instruction sheets, visual aids and tests.
3. To provide information about a specific teaching techniques used by the vocational teacher in the working area and in the classroom.

State Licensing Requirements

At this time, the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology does not license this program.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:

Once the student has completed their program’s required clock hours, and completed the required theory hours and practical operations with a minimum grade average of 70%, he or she is awarded a diploma certifying his or her graduation from the school.

Program Duration

25 Hours/Week: Approximately 24 weeks

30 Hours/Week: Approximately 20 weeks

40 Hours/Week: Approximately 15 weeks

Grading System

Students are evaluated on a regular basis on theory, practical and clinical work. The evaluations are measured on a standard percentile basis and the percentage equated to a letter grade. The Satisfactory Academic Progress Evaluation Form will be provided to the student at the time of each evaluation period. This evaluation form reflects the overall Attendance and Academic progress of the student. Students must maintain a “C” (70%) average to maintain satisfactory academic status. The system detailed below is the system utilized in the school.

  • Academic (Theory) Grading:

    • 90% – 100%: A (Excellent)
    • 80% – 89%: B (Good)
    • 70% – 79%: C (Satisfactory)
    • 0% – 69%: F (Fail)
  • Practical Work Grading:

    • 70-100 Points: Satisfactory
    • 0-69 Points: Unsatisfactory
